Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a dream for many adventurers. Standing at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), it is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the world's most accessible high-altitude summits. One of the first questions every climber asks is: Which route should I choose?
The answer depends on your fitness level, previous trekking experience, available time, budget and personal preferences.
At Genes Adventures, we offer four carefully selected routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho and Rongai. Each route has its own character, scenery and advantages.
Let's explore which one may be the best fit for you.

The Marangu Route – The Classic Choice
The Marangu route is often called the “Coca-Cola” route because it is the most popular and considered the easiest. It offers hut accommodation along the way, which means no need to carry a tent or camping gear. This makes it a good choice for those who prefer a bit more comfort during the climb.
Duration: Typically 5 to 6 days
Difficulty: Moderate, with a steady ascent
Accommodation: Wooden huts with bunk beds
Scenery: Starts through rainforest, then moorland, and finally alpine desert
Success rate: Moderate to high, but acclimatization can be challenging due to shorter duration
Marangu’s main advantage is the comfort of huts, but the route is also the most direct, which means less time for your body to adjust to altitude. This can increase the risk of altitude sickness. If you want a shorter climb with basic comfort and don’t mind a faster pace, Marangu is a solid option.
Machame Route: The Scenic and Challenging Trek
Known as the “Whiskey” route, Machame is popular among trekkers who want a more scenic and varied experience. It is longer and more physically demanding than Marangu but offers stunning views and a better chance to acclimatize.
Duration: Usually 6 to 7 days
Difficulty: Challenging, with steep ascents and descents
Accommodation: Camping only, no huts
Scenery: Dense rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and rocky summit
Success rate: High, thanks to gradual ascent and acclimatization days
Machame’s route winds through diverse ecosystems and offers spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding plains. The camping experience adds to the adventure but requires carrying your gear or relying on porters. This route suits fit hikers who want a rewarding challenge and better chances of reaching the summit.

Lemosho Route: The Remote and Picturesque Trail
Lemosho is one of the newest and most beautiful routes on Kilimanjaro. It starts on the western side of the mountain, offering a quieter and more remote experience. The trail is longer, which helps with acclimatization and increases the likelihood of success.
Duration: 7 to 8 days recommended
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, with gradual ascent
Accommodation: Camping only
Scenery: Lush forest, moorland, alpine desert, and panoramic summit views
Success rate: Very high due to longer itinerary and good acclimatization
This route is perfect for those who want to avoid crowds and enjoy spectacular landscapes. The longer trek means more time to adjust to altitude, reducing the risk of sickness. Lemosho is ideal for hikers who want a balance of challenge, beauty, and solitude.
Rongai Route: The Northern Approach with Gentle Slopes
Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is less crowded and has a gentler gradient compared to other routes, making it a good choice for those who want a quieter climb with a steady pace.
Duration: 6 to 7 days
Difficulty: Moderate, with gradual slopes
Accommodation: Camping only
Scenery: Dry forest, moorland, and rocky summit areas
Success rate: High, with good acclimatization opportunities
Rongai’s northern approach offers a different perspective of Kilimanjaro’s landscape. The route is drier and less lush than the southern routes but provides a peaceful atmosphere. It’s suitable for hikers who prefer less crowded paths and a steady climb.

Quick Comparison
Route | Accommodation | Scenery | Crowds | Acclimatization |
Marangu | Huts | Good | Higher | Good |
Machame | Tents | Excellent | Moderate | Very Good |
Lemosho | Tents | Outstanding | Lower | Excellent |
Rongai | Tents | Very Good | Lowest | Very Good |
The Genes Adventures Recommendation
Every climber is different, and there is no single "best" route for everyone.
However, based on scenery, acclimatization and overall summit success, our general recommendations are:
Lemosho Route – 8 Days
Ideal for climbers seeking the best overall Kilimanjaro experience.
Machame Route – 7 Days
Perfect for adventurous hikers who want spectacular scenery and excellent acclimatization.
Rongai Route – 7 Days
A quieter alternative with unique northern views and fewer crowds.
Marangu Route – 6 Days
The preferred choice for climbers who like the comfort of mountain huts rather than camping.
The good news? There is no wrong choice. Every route leads to the same goal: standing on Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa.
At Genes Adventures, we help each climber select the route that best matches their fitness level, experience, travel style and available time.
