Tanzania Visa Requirements & Entry Guide for Safari, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

Dreaming of a safari in the Serengeti, conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, or relaxing on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar? Before your adventure begins, it's important to understand the current Tanzania visa requirements and entry regulations.
The good news is that entering Tanzania is usually a straightforward process when you're properly prepared. In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about visas, Yellow Fever requirements, Zanzibar's mandatory travel insurance, and the documents you should have ready before departure.
Whether this is your first visit or your fifth, a little preparation goes a long way.
Tanzania Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?
Most international visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania.
Travellers from many European countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other nationalities can either:
Apply for an Tanzania e-Visa before departure. As the application process can take 10–14 days, we recommend applying at least four weeks before your departure date to allow sufficient processing time.
Obtain a Visa on Arrival after landing in Tanzania. If you've booked your trip at short notice, this is often the safest and most convenient option.
Some nationalities can enter Tanzania without a visa. Before you travel, check the official Visa Exempt List to see if your country is included.
Tanzania Visa Types Explained
Choosing the correct visa depends on the purpose of your visit.
The most common options include:
Single Entry Tourist Visa
The standard tourist visa allows most visitors to stay in Tanzania for up to 90 days and is suitable for holidays, safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs and beach vacations.
Multiple Entry Visa
Ideal for travellers planning to enter Tanzania more than once within a year, for example when combining Tanzania with neighbouring countries. Some nationalities, including United States citizens, are generally required to apply for this visa type.
Business Visa
Designed for short business visits such as meetings, conferences or professional assignments.
Transit Visa
Suitable for travellers passing through Tanzania on their way to another destination.
Student Visa
Required for study programmes, internships, research projects or certain volunteer activities. This visa should be arranged before arrival.
Should You Apply for an e-Visa?
In our experience, applying online before travelling is often the easiest option.
Benefits include:
Shorter waiting times upon arrival.
Easy online payment.
Less paperwork at the airport.
Greater peace of mind before departure.
Although processing is often completed within 10-14 business days, delays can occur during busy travel periods. For that reason, we recommend submitting your application three to four weeks before your departure date.
Tip: Always use the official Tanzania Immigration website when applying for your visa. Numerous commercial websites charge significantly higher processing fees.
Can You Get a Visa on Arrival?
Yes. Many travellers can still purchase their visa after arriving in Tanzania.
Visa on Arrival is available at major international entry points, including:
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam)
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar)
Several international land border crossings
To obtain your visa, you'll normally need:
A passport valid for at least six months
Accommodation details
A return or onward ticket
Payment for the applicable visa fee
During peak travel seasons, immigration queues can be quite long, which is another reason many visitors prefer applying online before travelling.
Which Visa Do Most Travellers Need?
For the vast majority of visitors, a Single Entry Tourist Visa is all that's required. This visa is valid for tourism, safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs and beach holidays, allowing you to stay in Tanzania for up to 90 days.
There is one important exception.
United States citizens are required to apply for a Multiple Entry Visa, even if they only plan to visit Tanzania once. This is a reciprocal agreement between the Governments of Tanzania and the United States and is a standard immigration requirement. The visa is valid for up to 12 months, although each individual visit is generally limited to a maximum stay of 90 days.
Visa Fees & Payment Options
The visa fee depends on your nationality:
Most nationalities: USD 50 per person (Single Entry Tourist Visa)
United States citizens: USD 100 per person (Multiple Entry Visa)
Visa fees are determined by the Tanzania Immigration Department and may be subject to change. Always check the official website before travelling.
Paying for a Visa on Arrival
If you choose to purchase your visa upon arrival, payment is normally made in cash in US Dollars (USD).
Tip: If you plan to pay for your visa in US Dollars, bring clean, undamaged and relatively recent US Dollar banknotes. Older or damaged notes may not be accepted by immigration authorities, banks or exchange bureaus in Tanzania.
Can You Extend Your Visa?
If you decide you'd like to stay longer in Tanzania, it is possible to apply for a visa extension.
Applications can be submitted at Immigration Offices in locations such as:
Arusha
Dar es Salaam
Stone Town (Zanzibar)
Extensions are reviewed individually and are not automatically approved, so don't wait until your visa has already expired
Visiting Zanzibar? There's One Additional Requirement
Many of our guests finish their safari or Kilimanjaro adventure with a relaxing stay in Zanzibar.
The good news is simple:
You do not need a separate Zanzibar visa. Your Tanzania visa is valid for both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. However, there is one important additional requirement.
Mandatory Zanzibar Travel Insurance
International visitors entering Zanzibar are required to purchase the official Zanzibar Inbound Travel Insurance. This requirement applies even if you already have comprehensive travel insurance in your home country, as only the official Zanzibar policy is accepted for entry.
The insurance should be purchased before travelling through the official Zanzibar Government portal:
We recommend arranging your insurance well in advance and keeping both a printed copy and a digital version of your insurance certificate with your travel documents, as proof may be requested upon arrival.

Before leaving home, make sure you have the following documents ready:

✔ Accommodation confirmation
✔ Official Zanzibar Travel Insurance (if visiting Zanzibar)

Having digital copies stored on your phone and printed copies in your hand luggage is always a smart idea.
