Lake Eyasi is a shallow, seasonal soda lake located at the southwestern edge of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by dry plains, rocky escarpments and wide open landscapes. The lake’s water levels change dramatically throughout the year, creating an ever-shifting environment that attracts birdlife and supports the communities living along its shores.

Unlike Tanzania’s classic safari destinations, Lake Eyasi is defined by a strong connection between landscape and culture. The area is home to the Hadzabe people, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, and the Datoga people, semi-nomadic pastoralists known for their cattle culture and traditional blacksmith skills.

A visit to Lake Eyasi offers a rare insight into ancient ways of life that have developed in harmony with this harsh yet fascinating environment.
