TANZANIA VISA
How to get your visa for Tanzania?
You’ve booked your Kilimanjaro Trekking and/or Tanzania Safari with us — exciting times ahead. Before your adventure begins, there’s one important practical step to take care of: your tourist visa. For many travelers this may sound more complicated than it actually is. The good news? Getting a visa for Tanzania is straightforward, and we’re here to guide you through the process.
Below you’ll find a clear overview of your visa options, costs, and what to prepare, so you can focus on what really matters: your journey through Tanzania.
Costs and validity
Visa fees depend on your nationality:
-
Most European travelers: USD 50
-
US citizens: USD 100 (mandatory multi-entry visa)
Both visas are valid for three months. The multi-entry visa allows US citizens to enter and exit Tanzania multiple times within one year.
When you apply online, the visa fee is charged in US dollars only.
If you apply upon arrival, payment is usually possible in:
-
USD 50 or EUR 50 (USD 100 for multi-entry visas), or
-
By credit card (additional card fees may apply)
Please note that paying EUR 50 upon arrival is more expensive, as the euro is worth more than USD 50. From a cost perspective, paying online in US dollars is therefore often the better option.
Applying for your visa online (recommended)
The Tanzanian government encourages travelers to apply online, and in most cases this is the most convenient option.
Why apply online?
-
You travel knowing your visa is already arranged and paid
-
Upon arrival, you only queue once for immigration
-
The process is clear and manageable with the right preparation
To apply online, use only the official Tanzanian immigration website:
https://visa.immigration.go.tz/
We strongly advise against using third-party websites, as these are often more expensive and in some cases unreliable. Unfortunately, we have seen travelers lose money through fraudulent websites.
After submitting your application, processing can take up to 14 days. Once approved, download or print your visa confirmation and bring it with you. Upon arrival in Tanzania, immigration will stamp the visa into your passport.
Applying for a visa upon arrival in Tanzania
If you prefer not to apply online, it is still possible for many nationalities to apply for a visa upon arrival.*
The procedure is straightforward, although it may take a little longer:
-
Complete an application form at the airport (bring a pen).
-
Submit your application at the visa counter.
-
Proceed to a second counter to pay the visa fee (cash or credit card).
-
Go to a third counter where your visa is stamped into your passport.
-
Collect your luggage and continue your journey.
Applying upon arrival involves waiting in several queues, while online applicants usually queue only once. That said, things in Tanzania move at a relaxed pace, and in practice the arrival process can sometimes be quicker than expected.
Which option should you choose?
Most travelers choose to apply online for peace of mind. If you do, make sure you are well prepared:
If you apply online:
-
Apply 3–4 weeks before travel
-
Have a credit card or international payment option available
-
Prepare the following documents:
-
A digital passport-size photo
-
A scan or photo of your passport biodata page (max 300 KB)
-
A PDF of your flight confirmation (max 1 MB)
-
-
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after returning from Tanzania
-
If a child travels with only one parent, upload written consent from the other parent in English
-
Bring a pen when you arrive, as an additional form may still be required
If you apply upon arrival:
-
Carry the required visa fee in USD or EUR, or use a credit card
-
No passport photo is required
-
Have the address of your first accommodation available
-
Bring a pen to complete the application form
-
If a child travels with only one parent, carry written consent in English
Our Advice
There is no right or wrong way to apply for your visa — choose the option that gives you the least stress. As long as your visa is in order, everything else will fall into place.
Once your passport is stamped, you can collect your luggage and begin your Kilimanjaro trek, safari, or beach extension with Genes Adventures.
* Important notes

Some nationalities require a Referral Visa and cannot apply on arrival
